Mapping Virginia Performs Data
What It Does
The Mapping section of this
site allows you to select and view certain
Virginia Performs data -- for instance, percent
of Virginia citizens without health insurance
-- by region or locality on an online Virginia
map. You can mix or match this data among
regions, localities (counties or cities),
etc.
You can ask the Mapping Tool to show you the same data for more than one kind of geographical parameter -- for example, both by region and by county. Or you can use it to show more than one kind of data for a single geographical type. You can even choose to see all the available data for a particular region or intersection of regions.
You may go directly to the mapping page now, or continue with this introduction.
How It Works
The online map works via a Geographical Information System (GIS) that presents information to you in layers that you can choose to view singly or together with other layers. Think of these layers as sheets of film or plastic that can be laid atop each other; each sheet is transparent so that the information on each layer still shows through, no matter how many layers there are.
The Mapping Tool page works in two panes or frames on your screen:
- On the left is the main map pane, where you use buttons to change which parts of the map you work with, to clear data, to select specific areas of the map, etc.
- On the right is the main data pane, where you select different types of data to view, and where detailed information about sections of the map are displayed.
Below is a screen shot of the Mapping Tool page, with its main areas labeled for your convenience. It may help you to familiarize yourself with this before going to the actual Mapping Tool.
Pilot Still Underway
Please note that this mapping tool is
in its pilot phase, and that:
- some functionality is still in development
- there are potential limitations to the data that are not yet footnoted.
Please explore and feel free to offer your input, as further development of this section will be based in part on user feedback. Please send your suggestions/comments to the webmaster at the Council on Virginia's Future.
